San Carlos Planning Commission and City Council: We demand that you reject the conditional permit that would allow T-Mobile to deploy a cellular phone tower on 515 Park Avenue. We are greatly concerned about the health risks for our children in the neighborhood and at White Oaks Elementary, only 180 yards from the proposed antennas. There are a number of peer-reviewed studies that demonstrate that exposure to electromagnetic fields from cell phone towers can lead to serious health conditions, including cancer. For example, a German study found that residents living within 440 yards of a cell tower were 3 times more likely to develop cancer. To this effect, the European Union has banned the placement of cell phone towers near schools. In addition, we are very worried about the decline in property values that the deployment of the tower would bring to our peaceful neighborhood. Media attention to the potential health hazards of cellular phone towers and antennas has spread concerns among the public and studies have shown that property values can decline between 2 and 20%. For these reasons, we are asking the Planning Commission to vote NO on T-Mobile's deployment on 515 Park Avenue.
