Wheelhouse Detroit is applying for a signage variance from the City of Hamtramck Zoning Board of Appeals. Our proposed sign is not allowable by the city's signage ordinance, which only allows for a business name and phone number or address.

Working with Detroit Sign Painters, we think our proposed sign is elegant and informative. Because many other businesses in Hamtramck currently have non-conforming signs that include iconography, descriptions of what the business does and more, we believe that our business requires a sign with more than what is currently allowed by right in the existing statute to be competitive in the market. Furthermore, the front of our facade is hidden by trees (which are lovely but don't make for easy sign reading), so the southern facade of the building is the only possibility for a large descriptive sign.

The sign will be 10'x6' on the south facade (Florian-facing).

We would like to present signatures from local residents, workers and business owners that support this requested signage variance at the July 5 hearing as supporting documentation.

PLEASE ONLY SIGN THIS IF YOU LIVE, WORK OR OWN A BUSINESS IN HAMTRAMCK.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Wheelhouse owner Kelli Kavanaugh at [email protected].

Thank you for your support!

The Hamtramck Zoning Board of Appeals acts like these outdated rules are set in stone but I see non-conforming signs on every block. I am tired of the bureaucratic obstruction when our facade is already buried behind city trees. We are bringing these signatures directly to the hearing to prove that the community wants us to be visible.

As a property/business owner on Campau, a Hamtramck citizen and homeowner, and DDA board member, I fully support this signage! I think it will be a beautiful addition to our business district and I welcome it fully! I would love for this to set a precedent for other businesses to come up with creative new signage as well. Awesome job Kelli & Wheelhouse!!

This proposal makes perfect sense from both a business perspective and a community perspective. Besides being informative, I think the sign will be an attractive addition to the streetscape.
