The university administration finally gave in and committed to funding a new staff common room. They spent years ignoring us but this pressure forced their hand. We won this space back and now we have to make sure they actually follow through on the plans.

Final supporters
Queen's University must be the only university on these islands that does not have a staff common room.
Why is this?
Some of you will remember that we did have a substantial one some time ago where the Student Guidance Centre is now. But it was closed under the last VC with no replacement.
We need one so that staff from different parts of the university can come together in the interests of collegiality.

The university administration continues to treat staff needs like an afterthought while they gut our shared spaces. I have been relentless in pushing for a meeting with the leadership team to explain why this lack of a common room is a direct attack on our professional dignity.

The level of interaction and craic in the previous QUB Staff Common Room was the envy of our University colleagues in the UK and beyond.
if the VC wants us to bring forward ideas about becoming a world class organisation then he needs to provide the opportunity to discuss across the schools and departments in a informal atmosphere. A staff common romm would be the ideal place to let original concepts germinate.
It would be great to be able to meet staff from other departments and promote opportunities for cross-interdiscilinary academic discussions. Staff from different departments and Faculties may have different skills and ideas that would encouarge lateral thinking.
The old staff common room was a great place to meet colleagues and friends from across the University and across all age groups, people felt free to just drop in and it was very relaxed and low key, people talked about their work informally and great ideas were shared
Since the loss of the old Staff Common Room there has been a distinct decline in collegiality and a drift towards 9-to-5ism.

A staff common room is a ubiquitous feature in almost all UK universities, including the Russell Group. The University has made it clear by its actions that collegiality is of low importance to it.
