To: Steve Heon, WAHS Athletic Director

We respectfully request improvements be made to the WAHS tennis courts as soon as possible. The primary improvements needed for the WAHS tennis facility are court resurfacing for all six tennis courts. Improvements should be completed by the end of the 2022 calendar year in order to ensure that courts will be ready for the beginning of the 2023 season in February 2023.

The girls and boys WAHS tennis teams have a very strong and proud history of successful state championship winning teams. The girls have won three state championships including two in a row in the past two seasons. The boys have won nine state championships including four consecutive state titles over the past four seasons. We believe that the championship efforts put forth by both the girls’ and boys’ WAHS tennis teams over the years deserve the attention and support of the WAHS athletic program. The current condition of the WAHS tennis courts is very disappointing and does not accurately reflect the high caliber of the championship teams representing WAHS year after year. Resurfacing the courts would be a significant improvement to the WAHS tennis facility that would elevate team morale and help retain/attract superior coaching staff.

We understand that Albemarle County Public Schools time and resources are valuable, and we greatly appreciate your consideration in this matter.

WAHS boys and girls tennis teams have a long history of excellence at both the District and State levels. These athletes deserve a first-class facility for practice and matches. The WAHS tennis courts must be resurfaced so the caliber of the facility matches the caliber of the players. This upgrade is long overdue, and I'm frustrated other WAHS sports seem to be a higher priority.

I’ve been a part of the tennis team all 4 years of high school. We have won a state title every year that we’ve had a season. We deserve better courts.

The tennis programs at WAHS have a long history of excellence. Please support the student athletes at WAHS by providing them a safe surface on which to play. Thank you, Justine Montgomery-Mom of former players Madeleine Ix, Rosemary Ix and Alex Ix

Resurfacing and Windscreens would be a great investment. Tennis (for WAHS teams & Public users) promotes physical and mental health, friendships, and time away from digital devices. All good things that many people would appreciate. Thank you.

Yes, both boys and girls teams have been exceptional for a number of years and the courts are in poor shape. I am often concerned that the condition of the courts could lead to injuries for our student athletes. I might also add that the community uses these courts in the hours when school is not in session and there are no other public courts in Crozet.

We wholeheartedly agree. Visitors to our tennis courts would have no idea how successful the WAHS tennis program is. Resurfacing is an important start, but other improvements including proper windscreens and signage would be helpful as well. Thanks!

It’s quite embarrassing to have such sub par tennis courts in the county. Let alone for teams that make it to state every year.
