The Pacific Symphony executives finally backed down and agreed to a fair contract for our musicians. This is what happens when we refuse to let them exploit the people who actually make the music. Keep your eyes open because we will be watching to make sure they stick to every …

Started by Orchestra Committee 9 years, 11 months ago

As a musician of the Pacific Symphony, a member of Local 7 AFM, a patron of the Pacific Symphony, or simply as a classical music lover, I support the efforts of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra Committee in negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement.

I believe the musicians of this orchestra deserve to be compensated at a level commensurate with their peers. The staff and executives of this organization have enjoyed this benefit, and the time has come for the musicians to be treated the same.

I believe it is unfair that many Pacific Symphony musicians do not receive a wage that is enough to live on in Orange County.

I believe in the artistic quality of the performances by the musicians of the Pacific Symphony. In a changing freelance world that no longer has the same ability to subsidize the livelihoods of Pacific Symphony musicians, the Symphony must commit to compensating musicians fairly for their talents in order to effectively retain and improve upon that quality.

The executives continue to ignore the fact that the people who make this symphony great cannot afford to live in the community they serve. Their silence is an insult to the talent on that stage and we are not going to let them sweep this struggle under the rug.

These musicians have spent their entire lives to bw the players they are now. Thousands of dollars for lessons, schooling, upgrades, repairs. Countless hours practicing, fine tuning. They deserve fair pay!

I played in this orchestra from its early days until 1991. I believe it is high time for the board make the commitment to raise sufficient funds to pay the players a true "living wage". The players deserve your financial support.

One reason I have donated my services to the PSO for 25+ years is so that the money that would go to my services would go to support a living wage for PSO musicians. Please work something out that is fair for all concerned. Satisfied musicians needed for great music.

In addition to their performances, I am grateful to my colleagues in the PSO for the work that they do as our partners in music education in the K-12 programs in Orange County. The musical lives of my students have been enriched thanks to the dedicated work of PSO musicians!

"The staff and executives of this organization have enjoyed this benefit, and the time has come for the musicians to be treated the same." Enough said. The orchestra is not only that collection of individuals who produce the product; the orchestra IS the product.

management of ps should be ashamed of themselves for paying their musicians so much less than cities like Milwaukee and Kansas City where the cost of living is so much less. Maybe they should spend a day in the life of someone that has to scrape to make ends meet and live out of their cars to scramble from job to job.

Music is their livelihood! Live performance will die out if they're not given an income that sustains their efforts toward a comfortable quality of life.
