The university administration confirmed today that American Sign Language will now fulfill the foreign language requirement. We are currently finalizing the implementation timeline with the department heads to ensure these courses are available by the next registration cycle.
NOTE: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE MONEY when you get to the next screen. JUST HIT SUBMIT after you sign the petition it will log in your name on the petition. No cost. It is free. They ask for donations on 2nd screen. Ignore. I will remove this note above when I present the petition to ODU...
By signing the petition I wish to show support for American Sign Language to be accepted as meeting the modern / foreign language requirement Old Dominion University.
By my signature I want to show that ASL is accepted by me as an official language having native and non native users, its own history, culture, customs and traditions, and a unique grammar that is separate from the English language.
I am currently finalizing the formal proposal to present to the university administration. This documentation outlines how other peer institutions have successfully integrated American Sign Language into their existing academic structures. I expect to secure a meeting with the department chair by the end of the month.

I work with the hearing impaired and don't fully understand, I have to write down some of the things I need to say. They are teaching me, and its very interested and now its part of what I want to do after I graduate from ODU. I was told in 2017 that I could sub ASL instead of Spanish and transfer it in, and now that I have saved up my money to pay they all seem to have forgotten that they told me that.
