This is a petition to have ASL recognized as a foreign language to satisfy the core requirements here at the University of South Carolina Columbia. ASL stands for American sign language. There are over 500,000 members and climbing of the deaf community in the US and parts of Canada that use ASL daily. ASL has its own grammar and syntax. ASL is also the third most used language in United States right behind English and Spanish. People acquire sign language the same way people acquire any spoken language. Please help me in my endeavor to make ASL (American sign language) recognized as a foreign language for the core requirements at the University of South Carolina Columbia. ASL should not count for foreign language credit, but it should also be offered as a minor.
