There is a big meeting coming up with the Department Of Conservation to discuss the ongoing recreational use of the Kaimai Ranges. Paul Michaels will be attending this meeting to represent all users of deer dogs in New Zealand. He will use figures collected in this petition to advise the Department of Conservation on peoples recreational interest in using Deer Dogs Or Big Game Indicating Dogs in the Kaimai Ranges and In New Zealand in general.
Indicating dogs are being banned from more and more areas every year. So it is very important that we put our hands up now to protect and enhance our rights to use indicating dogs on our public land.
The Kaimais is a good first step to preserving and enhancing our rights now because the future recreational use of this area is currently up for discussion. Once we succeed here, we can duplicate that to preserve and enhance our rights to use big game indicating dogs in other areas. We can then restore our rights to use indicating dogs in public land areas we have already been banned from.
It is very important that we work with the Department of Conservation to help them manage our public land in the right way. The first step is to put our hands up and let them know how we intend to use our land.

Having an indicator dog should make DOC happy. With one you're not going to walk past many deer. Effect. More deer being shot therefore numbers of deer drop. Effect. Less need for 1080. Win win all round.
I don't hunt deer with a dog, but its a longstanding tradition and has typically been allowed. I fully support the use of dogs on public land where owners follow the rules such as kiwi-aversion training and keeping them out of public huts.
I'm just training my pup now using Paul Michaels Deer Dog Training Blueprint. I love dogs and I love hunting, so it makes sense to me to put the two together. I'd hate to put all this effort into my first deer dog to be banned from using her!!!
Ive been breeding and using Hungarian Vizsla for deer stalking for 15 years, ive followed Docs requirement and had my dogs Avian avoidance trained, there is no reason to ban trained dogs from public land.
I believe it is important to encourage the continued use of indicating dogs on public conservation land which will bring conservation benifits by increasing the numbers of deer harvested. Indicating dogs are usually kept under control of the owner so they are causing minimal nuisance to other users and native wildlife
Properly trained dogs are safe
Esp ureweras. Please! Nice work DOC on north island with strong kiwi aversion training program and many areas open to deer dogs.

I use a very controlled Brittany spaniel for deer indicating. She is know more than 10m from me at all times in the field. She poses no danger to any person or native animal. I am getting frustrated that I am locked out of more and more country due to the no dog policy.
