Urgent Petition to Address Road Safety Concerns and Reckless Driving by DART And BODA in Tanzania
To: Her Excellency, President of Tanzania
Madam President,
We, the undersigned concerned citizens of the Republic of Tanzania, respectfully submit this petition to draw your attention to the escalating road safety crisis within our nation, particularly in Dar es Salaam. We are deeply troubled by the increasing number of road accidents that have resulted in the loss of countless lives and inflicted severe injuries upon innocent individuals.
The reckless driving behavior exhibited by some DART drivers and BODABODA has become a significant cause for concern. Despite efforts to enforce existing road safety regulations, it is evident that more stringent measures are urgently needed to address this pressing issue. We are alarmed by the apparent lack of accountability among certain drivers, which has fostered a sense of impunity and contributed to the perpetuation of dangerous driving practices.
Furthermore, we note with concern the correlation between the warning issued by the Minister of State in the President's Office in June 2016 and the subsequent increase in road accidents involving BRT buses. It is imperative that all motorists, regardless of their affiliation, are held accountable for their actions on the road. We believe that the implementation of stricter regulations and enforcement mechanisms, modeled after successful initiatives observed in other countries, is essential to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.
In support of our petition, we reference the attached article published in The Citizen news, which documents the tragic consequences of road accidents in our country. Additionally, we highlight the urgent need for decisive action by providing statistics that underscore the severity of the situation.
Madam President, we place our trust in your leadership and appeal to your sense of duty to protect the lives of Tanzanian citizens. We urge you to prioritize this issue and take immediate steps to address the root causes of road accidents, thereby safeguarding the lives of our fellow Tanzanians and ensuring safer roads for future generations.
OUR REQUEST
Our petition seeks urgent action from the government to address the critical road safety concerns and rampant reckless driving plaguing Tanzania, particularly within Dar es Salaam. We implore the authorities to implement stricter regulations and enforcement measures to curb the alarming increase in road accidents, which have tragically claimed numerous lives and caused immense suffering to families and communities. Specifically, we call for accountability for all motorists, including DART drivers and BODA BODAS, regardless of their affiliation, and urge the adoption of effective strategies modeled after successful road safety initiatives observed in other countries. It is our fervent hope that this petition will prompt immediate and decisive action to safeguard the lives of Tanzanian citizens and ensure safer roads for all.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

im still getting messages daily from people sharing their own stories about close calls on the road and it proves how widespread this issue really is. ive been working on reaching out to local transport officials to ensure these concerns actually land on the right desks. thanks for sticking with me while we push for safer streets for everyone.

im honestly blown away by how much this has taken off. seeing so many people speak up about road safety really shows that we all want the same thing which is just to get home safely at the end of the day.

It's a common sight in Tanzania to see so many reckless drivers. Reason is to award driving license who are not capable and thus are "untouchables" by the system. Poor road signs is the other reason.
Esp From bibi titi up to samora , there is no boundries n it is central bussiness district plus residential area , busses move at v high speed ,they should drive in said area slowly , n night time hv observed they dont hv their headlights switched on , so to sometimes to know if the bus is approaching is dufficult
BRT drivers and Boda boda drivers should be taken strict actions and the gvt should set strict laws and actions against rule breakers Mwendokasi junctions should have bumps amd speedbreakers on both mwendokasi road and public road
We had an incident yesterday 29th March 2024 where brt bus just hit a boda boda which carrying a passenger ,boda guy died on spot the passenger was sent to hospital he was critical and ended up passing away with so many injuries
There shouldn’t have been a BRT passage in residential areas in the first place. We have our kids walking around town going for Madressa and tuitions through out the day. Besides, there aren’t any pedestrian walking paths in our city despite of our main means of transportation being walking.
I strongly agree !!
Traffic lights should be kept on BRT lanes

The DART buses should be installed speed governor and also the vehicle tracking device and a speed limit too. They should immediately take action against the BODABODA driver who uses the DART road and either be punished and their motorcycle consificated by the DART.
