Subject: Urgent Action Required:
Addressing Reckless Truck Driving on the R399
We as community and road users am writing to urgently address a matter of grave concern regarding the reckless and fast driving behaviors of trucks on the R399 between Piketberg and Velddrift. In recent months, there have been a lot of community members that witnessed trucks operating in ways that endanger both motorists and pedestrians along this route. These vehicles frequently exceed speed limits, perform aggressive overtaking maneuvers, and fail to yield appropriately, posing a severe safety hazard to our community.
Trucks are reckless, speeding, excessively, overtaking aggressively, and disregarding road safety measures, thereby posing a significant risk to both motorists and pedestrians. Additionally, we as community are deeply concerned about the roadworthiness of these trucks. Many appear visibly worn and may not be adequately maintained, further compounding the risks posed on our roads. After further investigation, it was discovered that these trucks should not even be using this route, a decision reportedly made during a transport meeting.
We, as a community, request that you investigate this claim and provide us with feedback regarding the validity of this decision and the actions being taken to enforce it. As a result of this reckless driving and the lack of timely feedback or a positive approach from the relevant authorities, we, as a community, have decided to compile a petition. This petition reflects the collective voice of those affected by these dangers and must be considered as a matter of utmost importance. Please find the petition attached for your review. We must not forget that everyone's life is precious and should be protected.
As a community, we must stand together, support one another, and take collective action to ensure the safety of all. By working together, we can prevent harm to ourselves and each other and foster a safer environment for all road users. In light of these observations, we strongly urge immediate action to address this issue comprehensively:
- Enhanced Enforcement:
Increase patrols and monitoring along the R399 to deter and apprehend drivers engaging in reckless behavior.
- Roadworthiness Inspections:
Implement regular and thorough inspections of trucks operating on the R399 to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.
- Safety and Danger Signs:
Install safety and danger signage, particularly at critical points such as Platkloof farm and the Goedverwacht turning.
- Collaboration and Coordination:
Work closely with local transport companies and relevant stakeholders to develop and enforce strategies that improve road safety along the R399.
- Cameras at Key Points:
Install surveillance cameras at certain critical points along the R399 to monitor traffic behavior and assist in identifying and penalizing offenders.
The safety of our community must remain a top priority. It is essential that immediate steps are taken to address these pressing concerns to prevent further risk to lives and property. I look forward to your prompt response, including the findings of your investigation into the use of this route by trucks, and to hearing about the measures being implemented to rectify this situation. Please let me know how we as community can assist in ensuring the safety of all road users on the R399.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter

Every day farm children are using this road to get to the bus stop. Please give attention before something happens.. how many people should loose their lives before government listen and give attention to our outcry..
The road was not built to accommodate the level of heavy trucks it is carrying. Neither was the bridge over the Berg River in Velddrif. I believe these vehicles should be going via the Moorreesburg weigh bridge and they avoid it by using the R399. Please enforce this.
I agree to the comments about the R399 The truck driver are a law unto thier own There should be a permanent speed trap in place for these trucks The main road through Dwarskersbos should also be regulated from the use of trucks over the load capacity of 5 tons
There is a problem with these trucks on the R399. Most accidents occur due to driver tiredness. In UK HGV drivers are only allowed to drive for curtain hours before they have to take a break by law. This law isn't in force in South Africa.
The road was fixed in 2014 and now it s falling appart again because of these trucks. They drive like pigs. They drive in convoys so that you cannot pass them. Rediculous. On one day 400 trucks pass through on this road. Rediculous
I just want to let u all know that i cant take it anymore, because of the accidents that are taking place on the R399.can someone please do something about it
I just want to say that I'm really tired of this trucks that are causing accidents cant we do something about it.to get them of the R399 thanx you.
