Oakland County is currently debating how best to use a $75 million budget surplus over the next 10 years.

Two options are on the table:

Option 1:Use the surplus to pay for a property tax cut worth about $10 in 2015 and $15 in 2016 and thereafter on a home valued at $200,000.

OR

Option 2: Use the surplus to double pothole repair and fix Oakland County roads.

Our roads are crumbling and are in desperate need of repair. More than 40 percent of the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) road system remains in poor condition, and that percentage is expected to continue to grow for the foreseeable future.

Also, according to the RCOC, for every $1 spent on road maintenance it saves $3 to $4 on future road repairs. The budget surplus could be used to double pothole repair annually.

Furthermore, we can and should be using all available monies to leverage local, state and federal matching dollars to support road repair efforts.

The budget surplus is better spent making our roads better and safer and that is good for our community and our economy.

We are asking Oakland County local elected officials to sign this petition to urge Oakland County Board of Commissioners to use the budget surplus to double pothole repairs and fix other Oakland County roads.
