I am a Union ironworker who has a medical cannabis prescription. I am ready and capable to work but unfortunately I am currently being told because THC is in my system, it doesn't meet the Canadian "standards" of a safe worker.

I do not agree with our current system in Alberta and hoping together as medical cannabis patients we can show the Government, Unions, contractors and companies that we are hard working citizens and just bcause we use our medical prescription on our own time we should not be discriminated against. We all need to find ways of making people understand and mainly update the "Canadian Model for Providing a Safe Workplace"

I'm afraid to tell my employer as well. The model needs to change. Nice job and good luck.

This is sickening, it needs to change! Workers can drink to oblivion and come in hungover [which means they are still drunk] Or be under the influence of powerful opioids like oxycontin while at work of all places! But yet you can not use medically prescribed cannabis on your own time at your own home, for fear of losing your job.

I believe that what a person does in their free time (within a reasonable and safe recovery time between work shifts), especially if for personal medication reasons should be their own personal business and not that of their employers. This is my opinion is a violation of an employees personal life and should not be allowed.

Employees with medical conditions need their medications to be productive and competent workers. Like an SSRI, anti-biotic, benzodiazepine, or opioid; marijuana, although it has some known side effects much like other pharmaceuticals, is a necessary medication for many individuals and taking it should play no role in somebodies eligibility for employment.

Employers need to realize that just because you use medicinal marijuana doesn't mean you're going to come to work so stoned you can't work- it means you're not going to be in so much pain that you can work and won't have to call in sick....these people are not chronic "pot-heads" they just choose not to put toxic chemicals in their body.... don't stereo-type them :(
