Final supporters
As residents of the 25th Ward, we've become aware of some alarming traffic on the 4000 block of Spring, between Meramec Ave and Alberta Street. Too often, motorists ignore stop signs and reach high speeds on this very tight stretch of Spring. This is troubling because of the number of children living on this section of the street, including in our home.
The street is very narrow in the above mentioned block and certainly that lends itself to this being a tight-knit community. But there have been many occurrences here in which sideview mirrors have been damaged or destroyed; our suspicions are that speeding cars driving too close to parked vehicles are the cause. We also have concerns about speeding motorists when carefully opening our street side car doors.
We are urging St Louis city officials to complete a traffic study to determine what calming measures can be employed to reduce the amount of speeding in the aforementioned block. Should the study find cause for speeding abatement measures, we believe speed humps could help to reduce dangerous traffic behavior here and increase safety. Our goal is the safety of our children, ourselves and our vehicles.

I met with staff at the ward office this week to discuss our specific request for a traffic study on South Spring Avenue. They acknowledge the growing concern but we need to keep the pressure on by emailing Alderman Cohn today to demand immediate action. Forward this link to your neighbors on the block so he sees this is a widespread demand for safety.

YES ! This definately needs to be addressed. I purchased my home going on 10 yrs ago this fall. I've had numerous mirrors broken and I fear for the small children in the neighborhood. I'm quite sure it'll be a struggle to get a "One Way" going, but I do believe that Speed Bumps would most definately help the effort to reign in the Speeders.
I have lived on this block for over 12 years, and this is just getting worse. I am concerned that speed bumps are not going to address the issue that this street is too narrow to be 2 way (car damage is due to not just the speed, but narrowness of the street). I think the best solution is to make it a 1 way street.

to be clear, Ald. Shane is supportive, but the city requires a study to be conducted to determine whether Speed Humps can be installed. This costs $1000 that comes from Ward Capital funds, and I am not spending those funds without support from majority of neighbors; particularly those whose homes may have a speed hump places in front of them. Also, as I explained to the petitioner, the city isn’t even conducting those studies at this time due to Covid-19, so this will definitely take some time. Always glad to see neighbors connecting with neighbors! Keep me posted. Thx!
