As concerned parents, we petition the Junior School to extend the school term 2019-2020, or add extra hours for the new school term to make up for loss of teaching hours once the corona-virus situation eases and the Cypriot authorities allow: return to school.
What our children are facing is very detrimental, especially for the younger ages. The Junior School must show solidarity to the parents.
The combination of loss of teaching hours and parents who may end up losing their jobs due to this COVID-19, makes this petition all that more important.
The online classes provide very limited academic value and therefore we need a more robust academic solution, particularly if we are to continue paying fees in full. As everyone else in the Cypriot society, we ask The Junior & Senior School to fulfill its social mandate as a non profit organisation and assist in finding a solution in this very difficult times.

The Junior School board can no longer ignore this surge of outrage from parents who refuse to pay full fees for empty promises during this crisis. We have real momentum now and it is clear that families will not accept this pathetic excuse for education any longer.

The situation that we are now facing is difficult and the school had to come up with an emergency plan on how to tackle this. Unfortunately, for the younger years, the support was limited and the half an hour online lessons were not enough to cover the material, answer questions and allow time for discussion. Some more personalized approach was needed with some small group discussions with teacher, 1:1s and structured individual feedback on work. For this reason, I believe the school year needs to be extended to cover for the time that is lost.
With this situation, I dont envy the school managment, parents, teachers and students. Human beings need certainty, routine and comfort which was all swept away in a month like a nightmare. This situation needs consolidation and community unity. Therefore a school reduction is recommended or another fee structure should be offered to parents: 1. Who cannot pay at all 2. Who can pay partially 3. Who can pay in advance 4. who can contribute on behalf of others. I hope and wish this will be over soon for everyone fortune and sanity. A special thank you for the managment, teachers and stakeholders who make this school special.
1) On-line teaching should be done in full from 8-13, under normal syllabus, as per the school’s program for all ages. Following the break times. 2) thats the only way to make kids feel organised and show them that indeed they should study! Questions/Answers sessions, merely, do not show results. Kids do not feel that it is mandatory to go on-line if they dont have any questions. Therefore, a normal teaching online should be thought the soonest. 3) As well as extension of school hours during vacations is must.
As an old pupil of the Junior School myself I would like to see it maintaining its standards on all fronts!!!!. The school did try from day one to conform and adapt with the unprecedented and chaotic times we are all living in but unfortunately as the days went by it was apparent they could not keep up with the on line classes for all students as is the case with most if not all other schools both locally and internationally. I am therefore signing this petition in good faith that the school themselves will want our children to be up to standard with their schooling for 2019 2020 !. Thank you
The school has done its best under the circumstances but these online classes can in no way substitute for in-class lessons. Since we have paid tuition fees in full for this academic year and have not received our money’s worth (not the school’s fault) the school MUST fulfill its obligations in order to teach by example all the values that they say they stand for and try to teach our children.
We totally agree with this initiative. The school, reacted quite swiftly in activating the online platform for Y5, while for KS1 was much later, and must say a big thank you to the teachers for their efforts, as they also are affected by this "like war situation". Bottom line, we , the parents are not qualified teachers, and despite the good intentions of the teachers, children are not receiving the education they should. Given the current unprecedented and unpredicted situation, the school management should offer to parents various options based on potential scenarios. Unfortunately, noone knows what will happen but the possible scenarios are somehow predictable: 1. No return to school until Sept. ( how fees apply for 2019-2020?) 2. Return to school in June? 3. No return at all in 2020...Therefore, a reduction in fees would allow families, despite the unknown financial situation to keep their children at the school until we return to some stability. Thank you for writing this petition! 100% agree. Children must have proper lesson after the Virus-crisis! At home the lesson is not what we have paid for! School keeps very silent regarding this issue! Best regards, Anna Michaelides
