In England, Scotland and Wales there is a facility for drivers to place a number plate on a retention certificate for up to 3 years. This is structured in a financial way of 1 year - £105, 2 years - £130 and 3 years - £155.
In Northern Ireland a number plate must be transferred directly from one car to another with a single £80 fee. This causes a problem for drivers if they cannot afford to purchase their new car before selling their old car, meaning they must either put it on a another car, then onto the new car (incurring a double transfer - 2 x £80 fees).
Due to this policy, a number of drivers have lost their personal plate as they are not in a position to purchase their new car or have another car they can transfer their plate onto.
Please sign this petition in order for us to try and change the existing policy and bring Northern Ireland into line with the rest of the United Kingdom.
I am currently compiling your stories about lost plates to present to the Driver and Vehicle Agency. Email your local MLA today to demand why Northern Ireland remains excluded from the retention schemes available in the rest of the UK.

We hit a significant target today and the momentum shows that drivers are tired of paying double fees just to keep their property. Post this link on your Facebook wall so we can keep the pressure on the department. Email your local representative today and tell them that Northern Ireland deserves the same retention rights as the rest of the UK.

About time. Cost me 160 quid last year just to keep my own private plate because I was between vehicles. Should be simple.

Total joke. Why is it different here than in the rest of the UK? Sort it out.

Ridiculous that we are left behind on this. Spent way too much extra cash moving my plate around between cars I didnt even want just to keep it.

Should have been brought in years ago. Sick of paying double just to hold onto my own property.
