The Township Zoning Officer has indivated that we are only allowed to have the kinds of "arts" that Eliza Miller and Janet deCoux had (meaning, only the material arts, such as sculpture, pottery, painting, etc.) and that other things such as music, dance, yoga, spiritual modalities and the like are not considered or permitted as "arts".
We will be appealing this notice at a public hearing in front of the Township's Board of Zoning and their members on July 15th. We will appeal legally by way of "interpretation", meaning that the Township does not have any interpretation or mention of what is already grandfathered in as an "art studio" or "art exhibit", etc. We will also present evidence that many different kinds of art, including dance and music, as well as many spiritual events have been continuously held here since the 1940's.
If you would be so kind to sign this petition, indicating that you support The Four Directions Center and its purpose and want us to be able to host the kinds of events we have planned, we would be most appreciative. I honestly never thought this many people cared about our little corner of the woods but here we are and the energy is just incredible. It feels like we are finally being taken seriously by the powers that be which is a total relief because my brain has been spinning since that first notice arrived in the mail.

I remember coming here years ago for a meditation workshop. It was life changing and truly an art form in its own way. Please dont shut them down.
THEY NEED TO LEAVE THIS PLACE ALONE. Arts are much more than just paint on a wall. Ridiculous.

I started to wrote an open letter to the members of the township, but clumsily hit the wrong button before I could finish. It is astonishing to me that dance, yoga, meditation and more, do not qualify as art. I would argue that these things ARE art, no longer able to remain on canvas. Torn from the moorings of paper and paint or bronze pedestal, the ballerina begins to dance, and art becomes ever more transient and yet, beautiful. Prayer and meditation are also art, because when else are our words more heartfelt and spontaneously brought forth, than when we are speaking to our creator?

This place is a jewel in our community. Blocking yoga and music is so small minded. Let them keep doing their work.
