Please sign our petition to save The Castle Inn from the suffocating conditions on our licence. As the owner of this lovely Devon Pub, both myself and the managers here are becoming increasingly frustrated by the constant petty mindedness of our immediate neighbours in complaining to the council and the Enviromental agency, about the way we conduct our business here. We have no less than 24 conditions to our Premises License, which we have unfortunately adopted from previous landlords of the pub many years ago. An example of these conditions are: We have to close the back door leading to the only outside seating area at 9pm every day, The windows and external doors have to be closed at all times during any form of music ( including low background music), you can imagine how hot the pub is during this weather! The music of all forms HAS to cease dead on 11.30pm every night, although our liquor license is until 1am at weekends! The Courtyard door has to be closed at 2pm on a Sunday! Imagine asking seated customers to move with their meals from outside to inside at this time! Folks, the list goes on and on! Myself and the managers on site ( who are extremely experienced and decent operators) are sick and tired of not only having to adhere to these ridiculous conditions that are preventing us running a profitable and appealing business for the locals and visitors to the town, but we are tired also of the fact that a small group of neighbours are picking at every opportunity to have us closed down! For example, a guy rang the pub the other night at 9.01pm and reminded the manager that we had to have the back door closed, one minute past nine!! As it was the door was closed. Another woman is intent on recording our music nights and reporting every week, this to the EHO and the brewery. As it is, the music CAN NOT go above a certain volume as another part of the conditions is that the music cuts off at a certain level. Another woman is often seen to be taking pictures of our front door. The condition is that the door has to be closed ONLY when live music is playing, So to combat this, we switch off the music and have the door open during this very hot spell. Not good enough for her as she seems to think we have to close it at all times. Well folks this is only the tip of an ever increasing ice berg and frankly I'm getting very frustrated with it all. My managers are sick of it, the brewery is sick of it and our regular core custom base of many many years are getting sick of it! So we are petitioning to gain as much support in being able to go forward to the council and to licensing to get these restrictions lifted! Other wise, i shall simply hand the business back to the brewery! BUT WE WANT TO FIGHT IT!! So, if you can support us by signing the petition: we would welcome your support! Thank you to you all Marcus, Dawn and Mal x

Reaching this point has been exhausting but seeing this level of backing keeps me going. It is clear that I am not the only one who finds these license conditions completely unreasonable.

This is a good pub, with a friendly bunch of customers and it's a real shame that management are being subjected to conditions which don't permit them to run the business the way a successful pub should be run. You wouldn't see someone moving into a flat in Soho or Exeter City Centre having some influence over the running of the business in that area which has been established for years. What bollocks! I lived above Goldini's for a time, when the noise got too much I left, I didn't try to get the pub shut down. You know what to expect when you live close to a pub or a club.

I was just gonna add I went down old north street to tonight after I left. Right by the cables(compliant HQ) and guess what I couldn't here a thing from the beer garden. However I did notice a very large bunch of johova witness singing in a massive building right next door. All the windows were open and the noise was huge. I wonder if they have complaints, I could also hear laughter but as we know thats banned in old north street.

Thank you very much Jamie, your comments will certainly give ours and the brewery some valuable insight as to the history of the pub which will help them build a picture of what has been going on over the years and yes seems that this is an old war which we and some previous managers have inherited however for the love of what we do running pubs and more so for the people that have used and supported this pub for many years and hopefully for the new generation yet to come Mal and I will do our best to to put this old war behind us all and we hope the residents will come to understand the importance this historical property and business means to you all and Axminster.

I have visited this pub when staying with my sister in Axminster. It was a music night lovely, not loud as I don't like loud music but hot with windows shut. I have worked and visted many pubs over the years and never heard so many restrictions on a business.

If you live next to a pub then you have top expect some of the things listed. I imagine that the pub was there a lot longer than the complainees.

As an ex licencee i believe that these restriction should be lifted. There were no restrictions BEFORE the property next door became retirement flats..perhaps a harassment order against the tennants of the property next door might wake them up enough to realize the pub was there BEFORE any of them moved in...

Yet another new business being strangled by red tape and pandering to a very small but vocal set of narrow minded individuals.

Why complain constantly about a pub - if you don't like what happens in a pub MOVE!! Don't spoil other people's lives by petty-mindedness. Surely COVID rules mean doors and windows should be open now - does this over-ride the ridiculous rules?
