The Teachers of Kenya have had a long protracted court battle with the governemnt regarding a salary award given by the Employment and Labor Relations Court . The Court after hearing a case, challenging the legality of a strike called by the teachers in early January, awarded the teachers a 50%-60% salary increase.

The governemnt appealed this ruling but the court of appeal re-enforced the ruling and ordered them to pay the salary increase pending the hearing of the case to determine whether or not the increase will be backdated to 2013.

The teachers called for a strike on 1/09/2015 which legality was challenged in court by the government .The court declared the strike legal and protected under the law and suspended it for 90 days to allow room for negotiations during which modalities of payment of the court's award would be looked into.

What has followed has been blantant threats and intimidation from the Teachers Service Commission of kenya including withholding teachers' September Salaries in complete desregard of the court order,Threat of sacking striking teachers by advertising for posistions of 70,000 ''RELIEF TEACHERS'' ,Writing letters of 'show cause '' to 18,000 teachers ,failure to remit union dues to the Teachers Unions in an attempt to sterve them with funds hence weaken their operations and strength. In short,The Kenyan Government wants teachers to be their slaves. That the teachers of Kenya should never have a voice. That in any event that teachers demand for better pay,the government will always respond with the master's creed : " There are many out there who are jobless and can work for free''

IT must END..It Must STOP!

It is worth mentioning that the lowest paid teacher in Kenya earns about 150 US dollars while the highest earns about 1500 US dollars per month. The lowest paid employee(Clerk) of the Teachers Service Commission's Secretariat earns about 350 US dollars ( mre that twice as much as the lowest paid teacher) while the highest earns about 8000 US dollars per month ( more than 5 times as much as the highest paid teacher) . These are employees of the same state agency.

Why is the government of Kenya making teaching appear as a criminal activity in which when you engage in then you do not have the right to fair labor practices including fair remuneration? Why should Kenyan Teachers be taken through endless court battles by their employer who should safegaurd their interest? Why should a record 15 million children be out of school because of an insensitive government?

WE DEMAND THAT THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT RESPECTS THE CONSTITUTION,COURT ORDERS AND TREATS TEACHERS WITH RESPECT AND DIGNITY.

WE DEMAND THAT THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT HONORS THE COURT ORDERS REGARDING THE TEACHERS PAY AND STRIKE TO ALLOW LEARNING TO RESUME IN ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN KENYA.

WE DEMAND THAT THE KENYAN GOVERNEMENT ENDS SLAVERY SERVITUDE AGAINST TEACHERS NOW!
