Rapides Parish Public School Superintendent Jeff Powell has implemented a plan to close three schools (Bolton High, Phoenix Magnet, and Rapides Academy) and reopen as the K-12 Bolton Academy. The historically underserved students from Bolton High are being rezoned to another school with another primarily underserved population and the Bolton teachers and paraprofessionals have all been fired, the school’s performance scores being cited as the reason. The teachers at the higher-performing magnet schools, where students must meet behavior and academic-standards to qualify for attendance, have verbally been guaranteed new positions in the district.

Not only are these teachers losing their jobs, they are being retaliated against when speaking out and victim-blamed for their termination. They are being told there aren’t enough positions at the new academy yet over 73 positions are listed as open on the district website.

Parents who speak out on their behalf have been unconstitutionally banned from public social media pages.

Comparing school scores with such vastly different socioeconomic backgrounds of the student population is unfair. Rewarding teachers who’ve committed to making a difference in the lives of the children who need it the most with a pink slip is appalling. Some have been offered jobs elsewhere in the district with significant pay cuts

Fight for these teachers who are fighting to make a difference in the world. Make your voice heard and stand up for these teachers who face retaliation when speaking for themselves. Sign the petition to make your voice heard that all students matter and we appreciate the work done by our teachers who devote themselves to making a difference in the lives of ALL children regardless of their test scores.

By signing this petition you are stating that:

You agree that teachers from Bolton High School should retain their positions or be relocated to another school in the district with NO pay cuts

Children from underserved communities have a right to education as well. Taking out from jobs the teachers these children are well-adjusted to, is not just a threat to the teachers' right to livelihood but the children's ease of access to education as well.

If the current Bolton students are not allowed to attend, they will be sent to other already overpopulated schools which will further hurt their students education while the elite continue to be educated in small classes. They will receive private education at the public school expense. Why does RPSB keep hiring superintendent that don’t think enough of the public schools to allow their children to attend. If his plans are so good, why aren’t his children in public schools?

I am a graduate of Bolton. It is a great school and a landmark in Alexandria. Many former Bolton students have gone on to successful careers and much acclaim. Bolton has the distinction of being on The National Registry, a honor it greatly deserves. Many excellent teachers have served it and its students over many years with great dedication to molding outstanding young people into competent adults and leaders in all sorts of fields of endeavors. Bolton deserves respect that it has earned over the years. It is a travesty to rob competent teachers of positions that they have worked so hard to professionally serve.

As a former student (4 years), a graduate (1981) and a former teacher of Bolton (15 years) the way some of my former educator colleagues are being treated and tossed aside to make way for this NON TRANSPARENT plan should be against the law! The actions of this new principal at the RPSB meeting in March should speak volumes of her character and rude behavior (If I don’t get my way I will storm out in a hissy fit).

Shame on Alexandria! My Niece teaches at Bolton. She will be out of a job and she is a single mom of 2.

I am a 1974 graduate from Bolton high School in my honest opinion they should not put younger children in a school with older children ,this is not logical in my opinion. The school is big and overwhelming for the older children it's going to be double that for the younger children.Leave the teachers and the school along.
