Urgent! All Santa Barbara area Lodging and VRBO Operators!

An Early Renewal and Increase to our TBID Tax is being pushed through and as proposed will take effect July 1, 2022. Our properties already have extensive bookings through yearend that have the current TBID rate charged to them

The NEW RATE is 2% of your Lodging Revenues with a planned 3% rate during the 10 Year Term. The existing rate is Tier Based ranging from $1.10 per room night to $7.70 per room night with VRBOs paying $4 per night. This will be a HUGE INCREASE for ALL hotel and VRBO operators!

Our TBID Tax JUST INCREASED 10% Jan 1, 2022 and our current TBID does not end until Dec 2024. We would like to see the results of this increase before we agree to another bigger increase, will our bookings increase?

If you feel this Tax has grown out of control and you would like to delay any renewal at this time please sign this petition. The TBID requires only a simple majority of 50% to be renewed or cancelled. There has been no opportunity for opposition in the past. Now is your chance to make a change!

Best Regards,

Scott Perry

March 22, 2022

I am hearing from more operators who are frustrated by the lack of transparency regarding this early renewal. Email your city council representative today to demand they pause this vote until we see actual data on the recent increase. Post this link on your social media pages to ensure every local lodging owner knows exactly how much their bottom line is about to shrink.

March 22, 2022

We hit a tipping point today that proves lodging and VRBO operators are fed up with these surprise tax hikes. Take this momentum and call your city council representative right now to demand a delay on the renewal vote.

This is the wrong time to raise the taxes on the tourist that are coming here. VSB needs to try and make better use of the funding it has now. The increase is too much. this equates ultimately a 15% bed tax.

Please do not do this in the middle of summer. We have reservations in place already and have to change them on several online platforms. Give us more time to do our homework and see the data. We are all busy recovering from Covid and no employees.

I do support VSB and all that they do. I have spoken to them about this and they know that I support what they do. I do however feel that this is being rushed and pushed through too quickly with little input from the local hospitality industry. I think we should hold off for now and have more time to create a plan better suited to equitably distribute payment.

TBID increases? Are you kidding? The hotel industry in Santa Barbara has no need for aN additional financial burden at this time. It’s questionable that TBID has done anything for the industry at all except enrich itself to drink and travel on the already too-high TBID funds collected from our esteemed customers, tourists. Actual customers are paying for a few people to get drunk elsewhere. It’s a burden that will force local hotels down, and force some visitors to decide it’s too costly here. Santa Barbara sells itself. Hotels can advertise themselves. NO to continued TBID.

We want out of TBID. We advertise ourselves. We know our guests come to us by other means than by advertising efforts made by TBID.

Agreed, but the TBID is cancellable every year for a one month window…

We attended the TBID presentation last Thursday, and seeing who's there or lack of opposition voice, looked like VisitSB has the vote needed already. So be ready for the next 10 years. Hope we are wrong.
