"Memory Forrest" will be a temporary public art project in Oxon Run Park, Washington D.C. Chimes made out of melted weapons will suspend from the trees honoring lives lost to gun violence in our city. The chimes will create a soundscape in the park, and will be completely unrecognizable from the materials they are made from. We hope to create a safe space to honor lives lost to gun violence.
We need community support and signatures for this project to be funded and supported by the DC Commission for Arts and Humanities!

The project proposal is now under formal review by the DC Commission for Arts and Humanities. I am working with the legal department at Friends of Oxon Run Park to expedite the permitting process for our installation site.

As an american gun violence survivor I so appreciate that an artist is willing to take this on publicly. Practically anytime I tell someone I'm a gun violence survivor, I am met with silence. This silence of friends, people, society is not only alienating, it keeps me from participating positively in society. To come across an exhibition like this would be cleansing & clearing for me and so many silent others. We are silent bc terrorism works. We need artists like Stephanie Mercedes to speak.
I support this project 100%. Mercedes work is so important and timely, and she has taken great care in her partnerships in this community to create work that is meaningful to the community members where this work is based as well as the broader public.
I’ve followed Mercedes’ work since her days as Halcyon Fellow and am moved past words. Attended a bell-casting last summer. Really inspired event. I hope you will sponsor this public art installation. It’s a gift to all of us in the DMV.
Lives lost to gun violence always deserve a memorial space for the living to have a moment of reflection.
The WIRE fully supports this initiative as women born and raised in ward 8 who have been impacted by trauma, state violence and the criminal justice system.

I support this project! Mercedes is a talented, compassionate artist who has been working with the community for years to bring this project to fruition, a project that best reflects what they want for their public space.
