To Black Students at Lewis & Clark College:

We the undersigned faculty and staff at Lewis & Clark College want to express our support in light of the recent threats on Yik Yak to black students. The messages were direct and targeted racist threats against black students and therefore constitute criminal harassment and intimidation. This is not a case of free speech, which we support.

We understand that the College has contacted the Portland Police and we hope that the author of the messages will be identified and be held accountable. In the meantime, we would like to offer our support. We stand with you against all forms of harassment and racism on campus.

When one group of our students is threatened, we are all threatened. I encourage faculty to be flexible with assignments and attendance tomorrow to facilitate student activism on this important issue. #blacklivesmatter

I stand in solidarity with the Black students of Lewis & Clark College in the face of racist bigotry that will not be tolerated. May the response to this divisive hate speech be a unified front of our community working collectively to advance initiatives for greater inclusion and equity at the College.

I live near Lewis and Clark, in Hillsdale, and I hope the black student that was targeted know how much I and other neighbors who are not part of Lewis and Clark support him, and all students of color on campus.

As an alum of this institution it horrifies me to see this kind of behavior going on there. There was a swastica incident during my tenure there and as a Jewish student I was afraid. Let's show every student who is afraid that they have more people supporting them than people who are out to scare them.

As an alumnus of LC and a professor at another, similar institution that has its own struggles with Yik Yak I too stand (symbolically, from 1,500 miles away) in solidarity with black students at LC. Know you are not alone.

I lend my solidarity with the black students of Lewis & Clark. This is NOT an isolated, "surprising/shocking/one-time" incident, but a very pointed threat that fits with the broader struggle that we as a nation are having. Lewis & Clark must #walkthetalk and take action.

We must increase funding for free healthcare+education for African Americans, surge funding and resources for African American Heritage, and build monuments honoring the Hero’s of Black History. Semper Fi.
