Warren Wilson College must prioritize the safety of past, present, and future Black community members who have experienced great depths of trauma, current and generational. We have witnessed a great inability by many faculty and staff to address race in their curriculums, on work crews, and during facilitated discussions about race. Students of color are consistently subjected to microaggressions and tokenization from both teachers and peers alike. When students subject their Black peers to inappropriate comments, threats, and insults, and those who hold positions of authority are unable to support Black students or educate the white ones, it leaves Black students to fend for themselves.

Additionally, the shameful lack of diversity in faculty and staff employment leaves Black students without mentors they can turn to for effective support, often leaving trauma, and retraumatization, ineffectively addressed, or wholly unaddressed. These patterns leave Wilson with the responsibility, as an educational institution, to uplift Black voices within DEI work in our community and educate our white community members. This is a great opportunity and time to lean in and allow Black and Brown voices to be amplified.

Here is the link that will direct you to a viewing of the demands in its entirety. Also feel free to share that with folk:

When I was a staff member, I did not do enough to dismantle systems of white supremacy inherent in the Work Program/at the College and to disrupt the cycles of trauma lived by the Black and Brown students at Wilson. Shame on me. Power to you.

As Forestry Crew Supervisor I support what has been asked of the College in this petition, and am willing to act on the parts of it that pertain to Work Crew Supervisors and Work Crews.

I stand in solidarity with you as a biology professor and & department chair. I would like to help in any way I can. As a program, Biology must re-examine and revise our curriculum and our pedagogy to address racism and social justice issues that permeate the history and practice of science.

As a 2014 alumnus of WWC, I urge you to start taking the Black student body demands seriously, and make WWC a more accessible and safe place for Black students. My future donations will directly depend on this action.

It’s time that Warren Wilson made concrete efforts so that black students feel safe and cared for and celebrated and not just like tokens for the sake of boosting demographics. I support the BSU in their demands.

As an alumni of this school and a lover of this community meeting I believe meeting these demands is not just important, it’s essential. Wilson failed to meet the demands brought by black students 3 years ago. Don’t make the same mistakes.
