Black people have never existed in a world that we deserve. Black people have had to create our own spaces, opportunities, and avenues for as long as we have been in this country. In areas where education is the focus, we search for our reflection while facing oppression through silencing and aggression.
It is the tradition of Blackness at Appalachian State University to champion and advocate for the betterment of society. Making the conscious choice to do the right thing, not the easy thing, fully knowing that the space between these things should not be made wider by administration.
We, the Appalachian State University Network of Black Alumni with the utmost fervor support The BlackAtAppState Collective. Despite the white supremacist delusion, we continue to be both the Black and the gold of Appalachian.
We implore all alumni of integrity to sign onto our letter in support of students and Appalachian's commitment to be rather than to seem.

The volume of support from our alumni network has reached a level that necessitates a formal meeting with the university administration. I am currently finalizing the draft of our delivery document to ensure the language reflects the urgency of these student demands.

BOONE needs to change. so tired of hearing the same excuses from the higher ups. DO BETTER.

I hope to see real chance so that I too may hope to send my children to the institution which claims so much of my heart
As an App State alum I am appalled and mortified to learn of the administrations treatment of black students and their concern. This needs to be rectified immediately.
As an alumnus of ASU, I sign in support of the Black students at my Alma Mater. A rich education means we need to hear from diverse voices, not silence them to continue to hear what makes those in power comfortable.
As a White alumna from the 1980s, I have always been curious about what it must be like to be Black at Appalachian in the midst of a predominantly White rural mountain community. I believe Black students’ stories and understand they are calling for action because of their love for Appalachian. I pray the administration will open up and listen to the stories without worrying about maintaining control of a happy narrative - and call in more Black alumni to share their stories and engage in the good work of truly making App not just more diverse but a place where Black students and alumni feel heard, valued, and included - because App is their home where they belong. Also, a word of support for Dr. Fleming who has made heroic contributions to equity and inclusion efforts since his time as a student. Huge respect!
