According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, INC. (2017), Suffolk County has the highest rate of fatality due to overdosing, in the entire state of New York. Students at Stony Brook University are addressing the increasing epidemic on Long Island by spreading awareness and attempting to prevent further tragedies through higher standards of sensitivity training for service professionals and stricter hospital interventions post-overdose. Too many lives are lost to substance abuse and we must call for new tactics of intervention.
