The existing wind energy ordinance did not adequately protect the citizens of Chowan County.

The planning board formed a committee which researched and presented recommendations for a stronger wind ordinance which the planning board accepted and approved to be forwarded to the County Commissioners for a vote. These in error were not put in the text form.

On August 3rd, 2015, the Commissioners instructed to send the recommendations back to the planning board to be written in the proper text format.

Instead of doing so the County Planner and her staff took it upon themselves to rewrite the entire amendment, leaving out the committee recommendations.

Aug 24 & 26 the planning board met and decided to rewrite the amendment, leaving out the recommendations in direct defiance of the County Commissioners. They then voted to submit these to the Commissioners.

This submission does not provide adequate protection for:

  • Loss of property value
  • Mechanical failure
  • Noise, especially infrasound which is felt rather than heard
  • The environment and wildlife
  • Removal when the equipment eventually fails
  • County regulatory expenses

SIGN THE PETITION AND INSIST THAT THE COMMISSIONERS

DO THE RIGHT THING, VOTE ON THE COMMITTEES RECOMMENDATION

NOT THE UNAUTHORIZED VERSION.

PROTECT CHOWAN COUNTY

Updates

September 9, 2015

The lack of transparency from the planning office remains exhausting. I have been spending my nights reviewing the differences between the committee recommendations and the version they tried to force through because the truth matters for our future.

September 9, 2015

Seeing this progress helps quiet the doubt that creeps in after so many meetings where our concerns were ignored. This momentum shows that the county cannot keep hiding the true committee recommendations from the public record.

These large wind turbines do not produce the level of electricity expected. They are ugly, will definitely adversely impact property values over time and will destroy the natural beauty of the area. Maintenance costs are extremely high as well as replacement and disposal when the useful life has been reached. Property values must be protected. These people have NO RIGHT to change the details to meet their own agenda. Go with what the county supervisors agreed to.

I see no redeeming value for Chowan County. We do not share in the energy produced, the payment to the county and the number of jobs created are minimal. But even if these were 10X, the impact of these wind farms on quality of life, property values and even on our wildlife are onerous. The county could lose even further if residents leave because they find them intolerable. We voted strongly against these wind farms on our coastline and are even more strenuously against them in our own back yard.

This project should be put on hold until more is known about 600' turbines and the effects on birds and bats. Turbines this height have only been used in the US for a short time. They can be very dangerous in a hurricane or tornado which are possible in this area. I predict a future of law suits and many people leaving Chowan County if this is approved.

These things have no value to the community. They are unsightly and the surrounding land can be used for NOTHING. Do we really want to see these monstrosities at our skyline? You people that want this have ruined this area forever.

Don't want to see my county ruined by these things! People need to think about damages to the environment and our health, instead of thinking about money!!!!

I do not want these anywhere where it will effect my quality of everyday life or my property value. Chowan county has already made a negative impact in both my quality of life and property value to this point PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS TO US.You will continue to drive people away from Chowan County if you do not consider our feelings concerning this matter.
