As Coconutters treasurer, Neville Earnshaw, said via the Lancashire Telegraph , the "250-year-old dance through the streets of Bacup had been dealt a 'death blow'".
In brief, Lancashire Police have refused to marshal traffic during their annual parade on Easter Saturday andBritannia Coconut Dancers received an 'ultimatum' to pay £4,000 for traffic management or cancel their famous procession.
Despite full support from the local (and not so local) community this seems to be hitting a brick wall. Please show your support and hopefully, (you never know), the Council and everyone else responsible for putting the brakes on this may see sense.

What does the council exist for if it's not for safeguarding stuff that's important
We have to marshall our own procession, but we weren't made to do a paying course
I am originally from Bacup and love the unique and bonkers tradition of the Coconutters! Stop the insanity and save the nutters!
This is a custom of world heritage importance, what on earth do you think you are playing at!
The Cocnutters day is an opportunity that could be developed into a prosperous and positive day for the town. Ideally there would be a fund to give to the event - NOT a bill for supervision.

The local council (and national government need to realise the cultural and economic importance of the Coconutters' Boundary Dance and support it - the cost is a drop in the ocean compared to the huge loss to our heritage if the tradition had to cease.
