Started by Reclaiming our Caribbean Carnival Manchester 12 years, 6 months ago

We are the Caribbean Carnival Reclaim Our Carnival Working Group set up to ensure that the Caribbean Carnival which has always taken place in Moss Side returns to Moss Side.

Manchester Caribbean Carnival is now in its 44th year and for the first 42 years its home has been Moss Side. However, in 2013, due to the refurbishment of Alexandra Park the Caribbean Carnival moved to Platt Fields Park. We were promised that this was a temporary move and that Carnival would return to Alex Park, Moss Side, the following year.

Mickey Bisson, Chair of the current Caribbean Carnival of Manchester committee has just released a statement in the Manchester Evening News saying that the Caribbean Carnival may not to return to Alexandra Park.

No consultation was undertaken over the issue of permanently or temporarily moving the Carnival to the ward of Fallowfield even though this would have been easily achieved through a number of mediums including the AGM.We are also concerned over the lack of accountability and transparency of the current committee and believe that an Independent Auditor should be sought to scrutinise the committees processes and procedures.

Carnival is a spectacular event which brings with it colourful costumes, music, dancing, food and drink. It is important to Moss Side as it symbolises and gives recognition to the Windrush generation that took up residency in and around Moss Side and how they used Carnival to bring a bit of the Caribbean with them. Carnival is also an important legacy for our young people and needs to return and remain in Moss Side, as that is the heart of the Caribbean Community.

The economic benefit Carnival brings to Moss Side is essential and needs to remain in its community.

Manchester Caribbean Carnival is one of the longest standing assets that Moss Side has and we are asking you to support us in ensuring that it returns and remains in its right home, Alex Park, Moss Side.

This petition is addressed to Sir R Leese. Almost 10 years ago, Sir Leese initiated the forming of the current committee which seems to be accountable to the City Council but not the community as the recent protests outside the Carnival Committees AGM showed.

In this petition the Reclaim Our Carnival Working Group state that the current committee, especially Mr Mike Bisson, Chair are not fit for purpose. We demand that

· The Carnival returns to Alexandra Park.

· The current Caribbean Carnival of Manchester committee members stand down.

· That the positions of the Caribbean Carnival committee, once vacated, are replaced by designated individuals from The Reclaim Our Carnival Working Group

· The Council support the recently established Carnival Working Group to develop manage and deliver Carnival 2015

And by signing the petition you agree and support the above.

Thank you

The people have spoken and it is clear that Carnival belongs in Moss Side. Mickey Bisson and the current committee cannot ignore this momentum while they try to strip our culture from its rightful home.

Carnival has been an uplifting event for moss side and its residents for more years than I care to remember. As a child I loved the atmosphere and I now take my own children. It was made so enjoyable by the local community , a community that has put many years of hard work into the celebration of its heritage, shame on the powers that be for taking that away from them.

i know the alex park is a bit less accessable for visitors, and maybe other practical issues, but the carnival belongs in the area, for its heritage, its identity and its pride, things that are dangerous to dismiss lightly

Mickey Bisson and his side kicks really do have a lot to answer for. For a number of years my troupe have been dealt in a complete unprofessional manner. It is apparent that the grop is acting in a underhand fashion and it is our local community that has suffered and will continue t suffer if we allow this so called group to continue.

Alexandra Park is in the heart off the Black community, now that thousands of pounds are being invested in the refurbishment are we no longer worthy to continue to celebrate our culture in its rightful place? Its a disgrace
