On November 15, 2018, the Board of Directors of the Charter Oak Unified School District voted no on the Resolution Declaring the Property Surplus and Authorizing Public Sale of Royal Oak Middle School land.
We thank the Board for listening to the community on the issues raised regarding the sale of land, the detrimental impact on the community and the need for the green space for our community to play sports and recreational activities. This land is unique and must be cherished for our generation and generations to come.
It took courage for the board members to take a few steps back and listen to the community on these issues and to vote no on the sale of this land in the interest of the community.
The Board also Recognized a need for greater community involvement and the need for information to be related to the community accurately
Moving forward, we hope the board will listen to our suggestions before moving forward with the sale of any land in the District and appoint community members to work side-by-side the board and the 7-11 committee. We also hope that meetings will be noticed and advance and posted in the local newspaper for greater community involvement.
While the board voted no on the resolution, that does not mean this issue won’t be raised again. We need to be diligent and to be kept informed.
With a committee of community members, the greater community would be able to receive information from and present ideas and feedback to the board.
This will provide for a greater transparency and the dissemination of ideas to help strengthen the District and our community.
Thank you to the community members who came together sharing their experiences and love of the Royal Oak property and to those who had the courage to speak out against this project. You have made a difference in our community and for our future.

Seeing this level of support reminds me exactly why we started fighting to save these fields where my own kids learned to play. The momentum we have built proves our neighborhood is not going to let this green space disappear without a fight.

The board voted no, but I know this property means too much to our families for us to stop paying attention now. I am working to ensure we have a seat at the table so this land remains a space for our children to play.

I played soccer here as a child and teenager. I can’t imagine not having that opportunity and it really helped shape who I am today. I hope other children can still get this experience.
We need this field space for sports. My kids grew up playing AYSO on the ROM fields. Were will the next generation play? Why not make into park and preserve sports fields. Use excess school buildings for teen center and library.
This is just insane to me. I personally went to royal oak middle school and promoted and to see that they want to sell it to create more housing is astonishing to me. I hope this is stopped because where else would the kids go to school and community sportings ?
No notification what so ever. I am a neighboor to the school. You would think they would have passed put some flyer stating their intent since my home faces the school. Found out from a student at ROMS. Apprently teachers have told their students about it. Nice way to notify the community.
I agree. Also a district formed Real Property Advisory Committe stated in a report not to sale ROMS, but a Resolution to vote for the sale is ready to be voted on. So wrong. Where is the transperancy. Where is the checks and balance. Does the Superintendent have his own agenda that he is not willing to share.
Our children deserve Community Access to Parks and Recreation that will keep them fit, healthy and out of trouble. Also safe. This will impact the environment negatively. Too many homes, too many people, too many cars.
Moved to Covina over 15 years ago, grew up in this community. Please do not build more low-income housing. Focus on the community that has always kept it safe and give the neighboring shopping centers a facelift instead.

We have lived in Covina for over 40 years - When you go to Orange County you see beautiful parks and sports fields for the kids - we have nothing left here in Covina! We need to be smart on what we are preserving and whate we are spending our money on
