We, the residents, business owners' and concerned citizens demand that the official name of the area bounded by Broad Street to 24th Street and Girard Avenue to Susquehanna Avenue, the Cecil B. Moore Neighborhood in North Philadelphia.
Online maps such as Google indicate that the name of the community bounded by the area stated above is "Temple Town". Collectively, the community is offended by this term "Temple Town, which is consistently being used by private developers and Temple students as a way to identify our historic neighborhood. The name is racist, offensive, and a total disrespect to the late civil rights leader, Cecil B. Moore, the Freedom Fighters, and all Civil Rights Leaders and Community Activists who fought, died or, were arrested for trying to protect and preserve our community.
This community has rapidly become gentrified and we are claiming our rightful place in the Cecil B. Moore Community. Developers want to expunge our history and ignore the fact that we suffered through the riots, redlining, job loss, and the decline of our community. We remained in the neighborhood (not as if we had another choice) and made due with what we had. Those facts alone, gives the right to claim this community as the Cecil B. Moore Neighborhood.
We ask that you join us and commit to assisting with naming this community the Cecil B. Moore Neighborhood. Your leadership and support are very important! Please do not ignore the cries of the community!
