My name is Madeleine Young and I am a local resident of Bellenden Road asking for your support in addressing the noise disturbance issue that has been manifesting on Bellenden Road for several months. Below I have laid out the issue and how you can support in ending the disturbance and its detrimental effects on the local residents and many local independent businesses.
The disturbance:
For the past three months three men have congregated at the intersection of Bellenden Road and Choumert Road with a loudspeaker system and microphone, which they use to preach about their religion. The speaker system is loud enough that it can be heard inside homes up to 100m away, and is a deterrent to customers visiting cafes and pubs with outdoor seating, where the noise is inescapable and very loud. In addition, these men occasionally single out passers by to harass, commenting on their dress, demeanour and perceived failure to conform to their religious standards. Furthermore, these men film passers-by on a smartphone, making similar comments. This is a clear deterrent to potential customers and is likely negatively impacting beloved independent businesses in Bellenden Road, as well as countless local residents on both Bellenden Road and Choumert Road.
This issue has been reported to the council’s noise disturbance team multiple times, but a collective expression of desire for a calm, pro-social, and harassment-free street is far more effective than any one individual complaint.

Because the council’s noise disturbance team has been unable to properly address this problem, I will be taking this petition to the MP for Peckham, Miatta Fahnbulleh, to ensure that this issue is addressed and resolved in a way that allows all members of Bellenden Road’s diverse residential and commercial community to coexist peacefully, respecting the views of all without allowing for antisocial disturbances to continue.

Its impossible to enjoy a coffee out there anymore with that screeching megaphone going off all day. Really unfair to the shops.
