Save Loma Miranda (Miranda Hill) in Bonao, Dominican Republic from being mined by Xstrata Falconbridge corporation. Mining of Loma Miranda would be a repeat of the devastation this mining corporation has caused at its previous four sites, Loma Peguera, El Verde, Ortega and Ponton. They poisoned the surrounding lands of those hills over the course of 40 years to line the pockets of multinationals; such devastation and greed is enough proof to stop the mining of Loma Miranda. Help protect the source of water of the lower Cibao region that hundreds of farmers depend on for the irrigation of their crops by signing this petition. There is no environmental benefits to mining Loma Miranda but only the sure destruction of the areas ecosystem. Mining is a terrible thing for nature penetrating and scaring the earth; clean water, clean air and green forests are a greater treasure than money. The recent actions by Xstrata Falconbridge is an example of modern day colonialism produced by means of corporations and foreign forces within the Dominican Republic. As a Dominican-American with family in the Cibao region, I am signing this petition because it is absolutely necessary that this act of colonialist aggression be stopped. In addition, it is absolutely 100% necessary to increase publicity on this issue, and to push widespread action to secure and guarantee continual access to natural resources by Dominican nationals and Dominican nationals only.
I urge you to take my signature into consideration. I reside in the USA, and I am against Falconbridge intentions of damaging Miranda Hill environment in the Dominican Republic. Its purpose will be for an ordinary exchange of Gold exploitation which will benefit a small group of foreigners.
Dominican Republic is one of the only countries on Earth holding a significant biodiversity, and companies like this one are only interested in exploiting our resources to turn richer and our pay is only big damage to nature. Stop the mining ASAP.
Please do not exploit the earth like this. In the end, no amount of money can buy you the air that those trees give us for free.

I have visited the mining site at pueblo viejo the largest gold mining site in Latin America also located in the Dominican. The destruction cause by this sort of extraction is devestating for both local and global communities and the environment. The community I visited have lost everything, the land is so polluted they can no longer grow crops, and their livestock is dying due to contamination. The people are without water an their health is deteriorating. The worst thing is that most people do not realize this impact as the companies hide any injustices that occur at these sites.
