I have visited the mining site at pueblo viejo the largest gold mining site in Latin America also located in the Dominican. The destruction cause by this sort of extraction is devestating for both local and global communities and the environment. The community I visited have lost everything, the land is so polluted they can no longer grow crops, and their livestock is dying due to contamination. The people are without water an their health is deteriorating. The worst thing is that most people do not realize this impact as the companies hide any injustices that occur at these sites.

The recent actions by Xstrata Falconbridge is an example of modern day colonialism produced by means of corporations and foreign forces within the Dominican Republic. As a Dominican-American with family in the Cibao region, I am signing this petition because it is absolutely necessary that this act of colonialist aggression be stopped. In addition, it is absolutely 100% necessary to increase publicity on this issue, and to push widespread action to secure and guarantee continual access to natural resources by Dominican nationals and Dominican nationals only.
