The Grand Marais Public Library sponsored a drag queen story hour in February 2023 to help the Cook County Pride Organization with fundraising for their organization. Once again the library is involved in planning a drag queen story hour for June 2023. The library has justified their support of such events by stating that a drag queen story hour aligns with the library’s mission and priorities of “serving underprivileged communities” to include the LGBTQIA+. The mission statement that we are aware of from their webpage is this: “The Grand Marais Public Library increases knowledge, inspires creativity, removes barriers, and builds community across Cook County.” Drag queen story hours have become so controversial that it begs the question: Does this event really help with removing barriers or building community across Cook County? We don’t think so.

This is the crux of the petition... public libraries are funded by taxpayer dollars. The library should not support, financially or through other resources, activities like a drag queen story hour that alienates segments of the very community that they are dedicated to serving. Although reasons against a drag queen story hour are diverse, this petition is aimed at specifically asking the public library to stop engaging in political and ideological activism. The drag queen story hour is one such example of this. They are promoting an ideology and not literacy. This is not the job of the library, and especially a library that is funded through city, county and state dollars that We have provided through our taxes.

If you believe that the Grand Marais Public Library should not engage in activism, we ask you to show your support by signing the petition.

Thank you!

Drag queen performances have historically been targeting adult audiences. I think we can find better ways to enlighten and educate our young children — certainly there must be better ways to achieve the that goal. I wouldn’t want to see women dressed in such a fashion reading to young children, or likewise men dressed as women reading to children. Are there not better role models out there? Not all of the drag queens resemble hookers, but many do. I find it a poor representation of what it means to be feminine and a woman. I have quite a few liberal friends who also think this is a bad idea but we are afraid to speak up as we will be branded as being homophobic or anti-LBGQT.

Drag Queen Story Hour has no place being funded by taxpayer dollars or supported by a public library. Sponsoring this event is creating barriers and hurting the very community you are there to serve.

I am appalled that the Grand Marais Public Library sponsored such a controversial event as the drag queen story hour. These events are so controversial as they promote a radical sexualization of children by a scantily clad transgender man and are being banned throughout the country because parents do not want their children to be used to promote their radical political agenda. As a taxpaying resident of Cook County, I do not want my tax dollars to fund this or any more events like this story hour. Your mission is supposed to be providing community building in our county and I do not think you are pursuing your goal with hosting such oppositional events.

Your tax dollars should not be supporting any agenda driving programs. The public libraries stay out of any political or ideological activities period!!! It is a no win situation and further divides the Grand Marsis community.

Libraries are no place for activism! We don’t care what ppl personally support by choice but keep your activism separate of our tax dollars! I’m pretty sure many ppl don’t want their tax dollars going to the opposing ideologies-do we need to push that issue and demand that the library support say Christian activism? Ppl would have a fit!

I object to the highly sexualized presentation typically performed at drag queen events. This is so not appropriate for children. Also men dressing as women seems to debase women. A man still looks like a man no matter how he disguises himself.
