Stone PTA Dissolution
Dear Stone Community,
We have been discussing the possibility of dissolving from the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) for several years, and have had several meetings with Friends of Stone Academy (FOSA) about becoming a subcommittee- Family and Community Engagement (FACE)- as a better means of continuing our mission. We have researched and contemplated this over the past year as a PTA Board and in discussions with FOSA and Stone Administration. We are excited about the merging of the two parent organizations. We hope FACE will add to the important work of FOSA and help bring in more opportunities for involvement from families and the Stone Community. We envision a continuation of the current PTA contributions- including school events like Carnival, school dances, picnics, teacher/staff appreciation week, and parent orientation- and are looking to find even more ways to bring the Stone Community together.
This petition is a necessary part of the dissolution process. In accordance with PTA bylaws, dissolution requires a signed petition of twenty-five percent (25%) of the membership not including members of the executive board of the local unit. In addition, we will be conducting a dissolution of the general membership in January where we will conduct a ballot vote. We will need a quorum (at least 5 members) and a ⅔ majority of those voting.
The PTA is a national organization with affiliations on the state and local level. The PTA has extensive bylaws and requires local leadership to allocate time for reporting, paperwork, formal meetings, and compliance. In addition, they require over $4 of each $10 membership fee to be sent to the National PTA. Our plan is to donate the balance of our bank account to FOSA, who would include all future expenditures as well as income (from Book Fair, Stone Gear, etc.) in their organization’s finances. We feel having one major parent organization (FOSA) will simplify things for families, create more spaces for engagement by community members, and keep 100% of the funds we raise in the building. We are excited and optimistic about this change!
We would like to thank all those who have been involved in this process and look forward to your help in future activities. In the meantime, we need your help! To proceed with the dissolution process we must have a petition signed by 25 of our PTA members (those who paid dues last year). Please consider signing the petition.
Sincerely,
The Stone PTA Board
