In recent events, Michael Weaver, Ross Bartlett and Mark Burmann were the instigators of a ‘Blackface’ incident, which was the cause of great social uproar. The University of Stellenbosch has announced their acceptance of the decision of the investigating team, to pass no disciplinary action against the aforementioned individuals.

We, the undersigned, are concerned individuals who urge the Stellebosch University leadership to ensure that the interests of all its students are upheld by implementing Disciplinary Action against the instigators of the 'blackface' incident on this campus. We call for either the suspension or alternatively participation in community service as well as education by means of a multi-culturalism courses.

This incident affected a large number of Stellenbosch students, by implementing this motion we would be encouraging the creation of an environment that encompasses true inclusivity and diversity. This motion further practices sensitivity and consideration for the students of this campus and further supports the great progress Stellenbosch University has made thus far as an institution and the progress we have made as nation.

I honestly did not think this would gain this much steam so fast because usually people just move on but here we are and the response is just overwhelming. It feels weirdly heavy to see so many people agreeing that there must be actual consequences for those actions and I keep reading through all your thoughts and just shaking my head at how much this clearly matters to everyone.

the university leadership is failing us. if there are no consequences then they are basically saying they are okay with it. very disappointed.

it is 2016 and we still dealing with this nonsense? honestly embarassing for the university. they need to be punished properly or the cycle never ends.

this is completely unacceptable. how can they just walk away like nothing happened? stellenbosch needs to show they actually care about their students of color. shame on the uni.

RIDICULOUS that they get away with this. accountability is non existent here apparently. do better.

so tired of hearing excuses for this behavior. just suspend them already. they knew what they were doing was wrong and they did it anyway.

You don't fight racism with racism, the best way to fight racism is with solidarity. Our government had took an action during apartheid for unity. what this students did is to undermine our government decision of a none racist South Africa. they don't deserve to be given a community service punishment, they must be suspended; because if the university don't suspend them we are also going to paint our skins with their skin colour. if the boys was papers we would had burn them long ago they don't deserve to live in a democratic country. we are not going to forgive them unless the university take an action, Mandela and his comrades didn't fought for this. they must be suspended.
