Speed Reduction - Graham St, Port Melbourne
Speed Control Device Required On Graham St, Port Melbourne (between Bay St and the bridge).
Please sign for speed control on Graham St - before 30 June 2021 - So we can keep Port Melbourne safe
Recently we were again reminded of the need to control speed along this section of road. Within the last week, a driver wrapped a car around a tree and two people were hospitalised. Only a few months back, a vehicle totally destroyed the bus-stop on the same stretch of road.
Over the last 13 years I have been a Port Melbourne local, I have witnessed horrendous speeds up and down this small stretch of residential road and trucks with unlawful use of engine-brakes. Vehicles often turn the corner from Bay St onto Graham St and accelerate as fast as possible before hitting the bridge. Although this is a residential 60 zone, the speeds I have personally witnessed is something that should be reserved for a race-track. As anyone can attest that lives within a few hundred metres of this road, this is particularly evident late at night. Engines can often be heard racing at full speed from the lights, without so much of any deceleration or a lowering of revs until the vehicles get to the top of the bridge. The top-end speeds achieved must be mind-blowing on this small stretch of residential street. In addition to the dangers posed to many local resident's, the noise that is created, certainly pollutes many of Port Melbourne's residents near and far.
People are being hurt and it is only a matter of time before we see a vehicle mow-through a home, hit a loved-one or family pet. There has been a significant increase in children over recent years and the new secondary school and shopping centre planned for this road, will see more traffic, more children, families, pets and other pedestrians.
Please help to take action! We need the authorities to place a speed control device along this stretch of road. This petition is not the forum to debate what type of speed control, the device maybe. However, a solution needs to be permanent, so that drivers slow down, day and night through this stretch of residential street. This may take the form of a safety camera, chicanes, speed-humps or other device, as long as we see a reduction of break-neck-speeds.
Over the years, I have discussed my concerns with both VicRoads and the Police. They stated they would ' monitor' this stretch of road. However, with the exception of a booze-bus once in a while, I have never seen any authorities monitor this portion of road (Graham St - Bay St to the bridge)
Following 30 June 2021, I will submit this petition to authorities insisting they take action. I would certainly appreciate your support and signature!
