Dr. John Waddell from the Weeneebayko Health Authority recently visited the community of Attawapiskat. He was emphatic that conditions had deteriorated to the point that an emergency situation was unfolding. Families are facing "immediate risk" of infection, disease and possible fire from their increasingly precarious conditions.
Since Chief Theresa Spence first declared a state of emergency not a single member of the Conservative federal government has bothered to visit the community. No aid agencies have stepped forward. No disaster management teams have offered to help.
These deplorable conditions must not be allowed to exist. Canada must act now to protect the health and well-being of the people of Attawapiskat.
