We are The Social Justice & Action Network a group of concerned citizens fighting for the rights of abused women -the right to a life that is free from violence and inequality. We realize that access to sufficient and affordable housing is a major obstruction and oppression for these women, and we insist that the government implement a system whereby these women have housing provided immediately and are protected from violence. If women and children are to escape violence, they must not only have access to emergency and second stage shelter, but ought to have access to safe, affordable, permanent housing to be able to move on. Our long-term goals are to see government create at least 1000 more affordable and permanent housing units, change the application process and decrease the wait time to no more than 4 weeks, plus provide funding by November 2013 for subsidized housing, in turn accommodate our swiftly growing domestic violence/abuse population.
Seeing this kind of movement confirms that people are finally refusing to look away from the reality of this crisis. It is exhausting work to keep pushing against a system that ignores these women but your commitment keeps me going.

Too many women are forced to go back to their abusers just because they have nowhere else to live. This is a basic safety issue and the government needs to act now.
