Started by Decoding Dyslexia- Frederick County MD 7 years, 6 months ago

We** ask the Frederick County Board of Education for funding to implement structured literacy instruction in our K-2 classrooms, which amounts to approximately $800,000, as well as provide funding to implement an intensive therapeutic Tier 3 structured literacy program to help our moderate to severe 1st - 12th grade dyslexic students. Roughly $300,000 would be needed for the implementation. We also ask that funding continues for Language Foundations which is used as intervention for our mild dyslexics.

**PLEASE note your zip code when signing, we need Frederick County residents. Also, please add a comment besides zip code, it will validate the signature and express our concerns!

Thank you

I spent the morning reading through these comments and honestly my heart really sinks reading the stories about kids who are still struggling to get the basics down in school. It makes the $800,000 for structured literacy feel like such a drop in the bucket compared to the lifetime cost of a child not being able to read. I am trying to get a meeting set up with the district office so I can actually bring these concerns to the people who handle the budget.

I was looking at the screen and just realized how much momentum we have built since starting this because honestly it feels like the whole county is finally waking up to what our kids need. It is wild to think about how far we have come from those first few emails and I am just so grateful for the energy everyone is bringing to this fight for real reading instruction.

This is a great idea! Actually, FCPS needs to spend A LOT more on reading, including training teachers in scientifically-based reading instruction/structure literacy. Let's give kids the best instruction available instead of ineffective "balanced literacy" FCPS prefers.

Our daughter is now in 6th grade and although she has been in reading intervention since K and has had an IEP since 4th grade, she is just now receiving the appropriate program for dyslexia. FCPS needs to better identify children with dyslexia and provide the appropriate intervention sooner.

These programs will make the difference for so many students. Language Foundations has already started to help like my son who was convinced he would never be able to read and now he is starting to read and making new Learning connections everyday in the program.

I am a FC resident. My son is in the 6gh grade with dyslexia. Language Foundatins is NOT enough for him- bc of this he struggles ever day to keep up. He needs more and deserves more.

With a state that has 57% of its 4th graders not proficient in reading, it seems like FCPS would try to take the lead to reversing this trend.

Please provide funding. It will help ALL children, not just dyslexic children. And those who are dyslexic will not spend a lifetime thinking that they are not smart, or that they are lazy. Our children need to be taught to read in a way that is supported by current science and research. Thank you!

Early identification and intervention is so essential.
