Whats this all about?

Nantucket is a place to be enjoyed so whats the rush with so many fast drivers on this island? SLOW THE ACK DOWN was started when our family dog Alfie was Hit and Run on a dead end road leading to one of the 3 historical Lighthouses. People are walking, some with baby strollers, some with dogs, kids on skateboards, kids on bikes. Sea breeze and a driver goes over 40 mph thru them on what is basically a single lane road, hits a dog and keeps going?!

So whats this all about? Contributing to a safer environment for the future of Nantucket. We are all on this island, so we can promote and enjoy the natural beauty and sage community together.

This is a petition to create speed bumps on Baxter Road first and then more roads as needed to encourage drivers to SLOW THE ACK DOWN. As written around town..."If you are lucky enough to be on Nantucket, you are lucky enough!"

So lets enforce safe driving and lets spread awareness that driving reckless is not okay. Lets promote a safer community without the constant fear of fast drivers.

In Memory of our pup Alfie. Thank you Alfie for dying to protect the lives of others.

Whats it all about? Slow the ACK down!

I was walking down the road toward the lighthouse earlier and had to jump into the grass because some truck came flying around the bend like it was a race track and it just made me think of Alfie again. I really cannot understand why people are in such a massive hurry to get nowhere on an island this small but the emails I am getting from neighbors show I am definitely not the only one feeling this way. We are working on getting the local council to actually look at the maps of these dangerous spots so maybe they can finally put in those speed bumps before someone else gets hurt.

I was just out walking the route where we lost Alfie and seeing the response to this really hit me in a way I did not anticipate. It feels like the whole island is finally waking up to the danger of these speeders and honestly it makes the grief feel a little more like purpose.

Who speeds, runs over a dog, and doesn’t do the right thing by stopping? Shameful and disturbing for anyone on this beautiful community to do that

I am so sorry for your loss. Tragic and inexcusable. I would love to see speed bumps on all the major thoroughfares of Sconset. For whatever reason, cars and trucks are going so much faster than they used to and it is dangerous for pedestrians, bikers -- and pets. 20 is Plenty in Sconset!

My family has been here for three generations and as a person who chooses to use the green option of a bike when possible I can say first hand that the hurried nature on the island is out of control. My life has been out at risk on three occasions this summer. Two of three were Commerical plated pick up trucks.

Would love a speed bump on Rosaly Lane and Clifton Street. People come off Polpis and cut through to Burnell to get to Milestone. Something should be done.

This is a very tragic, sad story. 40 mph for 1 lane a road leading to a tourist attraction? Wow. That’s the posted speed limit on the major 4 lane thoroughfare by my house. Good luck!

To the residents of Nantucket . I have great memories of visiting, it’s my hope that it’s residents will take this as a recommendations to make the proper adjustments needed so that all can enjoy this beautiful destination for years to come. Kosta J Moustakas Bronxville NY
