As a student at SIU, I state my support for the direct democratic choice of new student fees by the students themselves. These fees include fees for the construction of new "student buildings", new categories for fees, fees that will not necessarily benefit the student during their time on campus, and any additions or modifications to the Student Activity Fee. This will provide for increased civic and democratic spirit of students, increased awareness of the costs and workings of the university, and increased student pride in the university. This does not necessarily mean that I am for or against any specific fee, but rather that the avenues for how fees are approved do not adequately allow for the students' voice to be heard.
