As a student at the University of Massachusetts, I support the following motions that will presented to the UMass Board of Trustees on February 8-15th, 2006: - A freeze on mandatory student fees: In order to ensure the University is more accessible and in order to begin to rollback the University\'s 100% increase in student fees from 2001-2005; I hereby support a freeze on mandatory student fees at the University of Massachusetts. - A commitment to racial and socio-economic diversity: In order to ensure that the University fulfills its mission as an accessible public university and in order to ensure that the university better reflects the population of Massachusetts, I hereby support a commitment to the increasing the diversity of University of Massachusetts Amherst. Public higher education should be a right and not a privilege, and I recognize these motions as first steps toward a system that is free, open, and accessible to all.

I really thought this might just fizzle out to be honest but now my inbox is actually exploding with these notifications and it makes it feel like people are finally noticing how ridiculous these fee hikes really are. Maybe the board will actually listen if we keep this kind of energy up because sitting in my dorm looking at the screen feels a lot less lonely now.

UMass should look like the rest of the state. diversity matters and they need to do better.
