Enough is enough! We have seen too many schools attacked and too many children dying at the hands of armed attackers. Most school shootings occur in communities similar to ours, and no one can guarantee that it will not happen here. A group of Oconee County citizens is requesting that the Board of Education place armed officers at every public school campus in the county for the entire school day. These officers will be on site to protect staff and students, with the goal of preventing attacks from occurring. The details of what type of officer (e.g., deputy vs SRO) have not been discussed, nor who will pay for this (BOE vs Sheriff’s Office.) At this time, we are trying to prove to the Board that a large percentage of citizens support this. Please sign if you are in support of this initiative and would like to see the community and the Board of Education work together to protect our children. This petition is open to ALL citizens of Oconee County!

This list will not be distributed to anyone who is not affiliated with protectocschools.org.

Thank you so much for your support!!

The feedback from local families remains heavy because the fear for our children does not go away. I am still working behind the scenes to get a direct audience with the Board of Education to present these names. This is draining work but retreating is not an option.

Reaching this level of support has been a long and exhausting process. I am drained by the fight but seeing this many people join the cause keeps me moving forward. We are finally getting the attention we need to force a real conversation.

I fully support this initiative as long as the guards have mental evaluations prior to service and extensive law enforcement experiences.

Have been in favor of this since my time on grand jury in 2018 and not being satisfied with Branch’s and LeDuff’s reasons for not having them. And they are still making that same argument today despite the overwhelming need.

I am a former School Resource Officer. I have and always will believe that having an certified armed officer at all schools is a great idea. I have two children currently in Oconee County Schools.

We have the money in our County with the wealth of our residents. We should set up a private fund to pay for these officers. Protect our kids and show why we are the number 1 school district in the State.

Student and staff safety must be prioritized, therefore armed police officers must be assigned to every school in the Oconee County Public School System. Police presence doesn't guarantee a school shooting won't happen, but police presence would undoubtedly be a great deterrent. ALL FIVE SURROUNDING COUNTY'S PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEMS HAVE ARMED OFFICERS. Oconee County Schools love to boast of their high graduation rates, test scores, and college acceptance rates of students, but these are worthless when students and staff are lying slain within the halls of their schools.

Yes, having so many trained SRO officers, per certain ratio of students -that carry- has proven to be a deterrent to keep students and staff safe. I don't think it is a teacher's responsibility to carry.
