Prime Minister,
We call upon you to make a public inquiry into the horrific attack upon the
Muslim New Zealanders in Christchurch. The nation deserves to know exactly what
happened and how it came to happen.
Whether it was another failure of Police, a failure of the security service
or a failure of our Arms Laws. Or simply the unpredictable actions of a
monster.
Only then can we act to prevent such a tragedy from ever occurring again.
It concerns us greatly that you are rushing to institute changes to the Arms
Act. More so that this is being done in back rooms, by unknown people and
without public consultation. That is not democracy.
Please remember that this is not a binary proposition. This is not just a
question of if a rushed new law will do good or not. It could also do great
harm.
Bad law could repeat the mistakes of other nations and drive guns
underground. Where criminals and terrorist groups can quickly acquire them.
Making another terror attack much more likely.
We understand that the deceitful Police Association will be pressuring you
but just remember - the easiest way to spot a conman is that they create a
false sense of urgency.
It has been thirty years since something remotely comparable has happened in
New Zealand. We have time to do this right.
Thank you for your consideration,

I believe that the government is rushing to make changes to the Arms Act without proper consultation with people from the shooting fraternity. We live in a democratic society in New Zealand and governments proposed changes to the Arms Act does not constitute democracy.
