San Francisco Public Schools are currently facing a substitute teacher crisis. Frequently, substitute jobs are going unfilled. Schools are left to pick up the pieces. Classrooms are understaffed and overcrowded. There is inadequate staffing and support. Students are wasting time and learning opportunities. This is not only a safety issue, but also an issue of equity. Low-income, higher-needs schools have been disproportionally impacted by this crisis.
Join us as we demand the following from the San Francisco Unified School District
- The SFUSD Human Resources (HR) office deploys to schools all certificated staff from central office, for every unfilled position, until an adequate number of substitutes have been hires
- Every school is guaranteed site-based sub staffing proportional to their student population
- HR hires, trains, and maintains a full substitute pool
- Substitutes are provided for paraprofessionals, secretaries, counselors, nurses, and all other full-time site positions
- HR hires a full substitute staffing team to review vacancies every morning and find immediate solutions
- Streamlined system for schools to report substitute no-shows and cancellations, and concerns regarding substitute actions or contract violations

I have sent a formal request to the school board to present these demands during the upcoming open session. My focus is now on securing commitments from district leadership regarding the immediate deployment of central office staff to fill these vacancies.

I have 2 kids in SFUSD (1st and 3rd grades) and this sub situation is really unfortunate. We have a lot of subs who cancel the morning of. Those classes are, like someone else mentioned, split up and placed into other classrooms. Often not their own grade. We can do better San Francisco!
I am shocked every time my son comes home and tells me "the teacher wasn't there so some of us went to different classrooms and waiting in the back for the day." Without subs, it becomes a day of babysitting versus a day of education.
With a partner who has been teaching for SFUSD for more than 15 years and a fourth grader at Flynn Elementary,I know too well how the sub shortage diminishes the quality of the school environment. If SFUSD paid anything close to a living wage the problem would be solved.
I am a retiring teacher from Mission HS. I will be retiring with about two months of sick leave that I never took because there were never enough qualified teachers to sub. I suggest to keep the core sub program which places experienced tenured teachers in the high needs classrooms and pays them accordingly.
SFUSD has seriously dropped the ball on this matter. As a parent it's disconcerting to be informed of 27 days of substitute "no show". We need a more affirmative action on this matter, something that would be beneficial to the children/teachers.
Agree this is a problem. But paraprofessionals are part-time employees not full time. That needs to be recognized and changed!
Our kids deserve better!

The plethora of PD's associated w/trainings and testing and implementation of the new reading/writing/core curriculum has heavily impacted the sub situ!! The lack of subs for support services, e.g. our school libraries, often forces those professionals to simply "close"!
