By signing this petition, we ask that the AUHSD as well as policymakers take action to ensure that every student has equitable access to education.

The Problem: Chronic absenteeism is a growing crisis in our schools, disproportionately impacting low-income students and those facing mental health challenges. The lack of reliable transportation, inadequate mental health resources, and the need for more inclusive school environments prevent many students from accessing the education they deserve.

The Solutions:

  1. Implement Free, good-quality busing programs – Ensure all students have reliable transportation to and from school, removing a significant barrier to attendance.
  2. Expand mental health resources in schools – Increase funding for school counselors, provide accessible therapy services, and create safe spaces for mental health discussions.
  3. Train educators on inclusivity & cultural sensitivity – Equip teachers with the tools to foster a more supportive and inclusive learning environment.
  4. Develop data-driven attendance monitoring & early intervention – Identify and assist at-risk students before they fall into chronic absenteeism patterns.

Why This Matters: Education is a right, protected by cases such as Brown v. Board of Education (1954) and Serrano v. Priest (Cal. 1977). Schools with strong mental health and transportation support see higher attendance rates and improved academic outcomes, and implementing these solutions will create a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students.

the school district totally ignores the mental health side of things. these kids are struggling and just need someone to listen to them.
