I have recently discovered that not only I, but many others at SMMHS do not agree with the school Dress Code. I feel that it is my place as a conflicted middle school student at SMMHS to do something about this, therefore I am creating this petition to share with the faculty, in order for them to understand how many people may be dissatisfied with the dress code.I believe that the school dress code should allow leggings, (just obviously not extremely skin-tight pants) and should have shorts be at least 6 inches above the knee, which would be mid-thigh length.
I feel that the current dress code is outdated, and unfair to the female population of the school. It does not reflect the current culture of society today. Adjustments should be made within reason. To require shorts to be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee is unrealistic. Shorts are not made that long (unless they are extremely unattractive uniformed shorts) and wearing anything under shorts (as was recently proposed by a teacher for field trip purposes) entirely defeats the purpose of wearing shorts (that is not to sweat to death). This is just one item out of many.
By signing this petition, I hope we can change this.

The administration keeps ignoring the fact that their current rules are completely impossible to follow. They want us to dress like it is the fifties while we are just trying to survive the heat in a classroom. We are not backing down until they rewrite this outdated policy.

The administration at SMMHS clearly underestimated how many of us are sick of these archaic and sexist rules. This momentum proves that we refuse to be silenced by adults who care more about fabric hemlines than our comfort.

i don’t like how girls who look older are shamed and treated differently when it comes to clothes then girls who look their age
When it comes to girls clothing people can be very sexist toward us, and as girl we get in trouble for showing to much skin but, 1.) it is most definitely not our fault we are shaped the way we are 2.) if a boy is distracted by our legs and or shoulders that is not our fault the way they look at us, if they can’t look at our shoulders and not be distracted by them then they should be sent home until they can control themselves 3.) boys are out of dress code all the time and are 95% less likely to get dress coded then us
Should be able to wear shorts that are not 3 inches from are knee and also should be able to wear leggings
A huge part of dress codes is to keep girls from being distracting and sexual. But if we’re trying to express ourselves or just be comfortable, isn’t it others fault that they’re sexualizing us? #iamnotadistraction
if i told a teacher i was distracted by a guys muscles or whatever i would be called a boy crazy obsessed teenage girl but when a guy is distracted its just guys being dudes?

I got dress coded once for having holes in my jeans.. but there was fabric under the holes.. and I got ISS for it and was told by a MALE teacher “even if there’s fabric under it, we can’t have the appearance of holes, it might be distracting for the boys.”
