The Females of Winder Barrow High School are filing this petition regarding the dress code policy of WBHS. For years we have worn Nike running shorts daily and it has been an acceptable and widespread trend. Our intentions of wearing these shorts are not to be provocative, but to go throughout our day wearing something comfortable as we always have.
Page 32 of the school agenda states that "Shorts, skirts, dresses, and spirit wear must be of reasonable length; e.g., mid-thigh of they are to be worn at school." We [girls of WBHS] believe that Nike running shorts are the best selection to best fit this rule in department stores today. It has become increasingly difficult to comply with trends and styles of 2012, however Nike running shorts always remain at a constant length and are convenient when shopping for school clothes because we have always seen them as acceptable.
Several sports also wear these shorts during practices and events. It has become a scheduled routine in the mornings to pick an outfit that will best fit your day's event and for many that includes and after school practice, Physical Education during the day, or other sporty activities and all year the chosen article of clothing has been Nike running shorts. We would also like to bring up the fact that Winder Barrow High School has sports teams that wear clothing that are the same length, or shorter and more revealing than Nike running shorts such as our cheerleaders, track and field members, cross country runners, and soccer.
On behalf of the female population of Winder Barrow High School, we ask that you please reconsider your rule regarding Nike running shorts so that we can all feel comfortable in our learning environment and return to the way we use to dress and saw as completely appropriate.
I have spent my mornings talking to friends in the hallway and it is clear that so many of us are tired of feeling singled out for wearing clothes that we use for practice every single day. I am currently working on a formal letter to the administration to explain why these rules feel so inconsistent for those of us involved in sports.
March 20, 2012
Seeing so many of my classmates join in confirms that I am not the only one frustrated by these double standards. It feels like we are finally being taken seriously about the way our daily comfort is being policed.
