The current proposal for the new mountain bike park put together by World Trail has over 65Km of trails running through the NPWS reserve surrounding Mt Canobolas, 30 minute drive south west of Orange, NSW. This area is home to some unique flora and fauna species that can only be found on the mountain itself and a few small areas within NSW. As the native vegetation density in this area is high, the disruption that would occur would also be high. There is no need to leave a footprint any bigger in this area than we already have, especially when there are suitable alternatives nearby outside of the conservation area.
The ecological and social impacts of mountain bike riding are becoming increasingly obvious in national parks e.g. Kosciuszko. Conservation areas must prioritise the protection of nature. High impact recreation must take place on other land tenures. Cleared land is suitable for such recreation and, best practice planning could include revegetation of such areas to provide shade, rest areas.
